FBI agents arrested a woman accused of planning a bomb attack on the New York State Capitol, according to information reported by Fox News on Thursday.
Jessica Bowie, 35, a resident of Albany, the state capital, is accused of attempting to provide material support to the terrorist group Islamic State (IS).
The FBI claims that Bowie pledged allegiance to the terrorist group, spoke of hiding a bomb in a DoorDash food delivery bag, and wanted to perpetrate the attack while state senators were in session.
The detainee was planning an IS-inspired attack with the goal of assassinating those legislators, according to authorities.
The alleged plot unfolded over the course of a month. Starting in mid-July, Bowie communicated with an FBI informant posing as an IS facilitator, from whom she requested help building the explosives and revealed that the Capitol was her primary target.
Investigators indicated that the woman surveyed the building's surroundings on at least five separate occasions between July 21 and August 9, taking photographs and analyzing security in the area.
State Governor Kathy Hochul thanked the FBI and local police for the work that led to Bowie's arrest and recalled that earlier this year, amid a rise in political violence and threats against public officials, security was reinforced at the Capitol and throughout the state government.
"While there is no immediate threat at this time, we will continue to work closely with our law enforcement partners to protect New Yorkers and keep our communities safe," she indicated in a statement.
