Cyclone Trudy intensified this Thursday into a category 1 hurricane off the Mexican Pacific coast, where it threatens to cause heavy rains, strong winds, and high waves in the southern states of Oaxaca and Guerrero, according to the National Meteorological Service (SMN).

The agency, which is part of the National Water Commission (Conagua), specifies that Trudy reached during the early morning and that at 6:00 a.m. local time (12:00 GMT), its center was 465 kilometers south-southwest of Acapulco, Guerrero, and 720 kilometers south-southeast of Manzanillo, Colima.

The weather system is recording maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour, gusts of up to 150 kilometers per hour, and is moving northwest at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour.

According to the forecast, its circulation will cause heavy rains, with accumulations of between 75 and 150 millimeters, in the northeast and southwest of Oaxaca, as well as very strong rainfall, between 50 and 75 millimeters, in the west, south, and east of Guerrero.

Sustained winds of between 30 and 40 kilometers per hour are also expected, with gusts of 50 to 70 kilometers per hour, in addition to waves of between two and three meters in height along the coasts of both states.

The SMN warns that the rainfall could cause landslides, rising river and stream levels, as well as overflows and flooding in low-lying areas, and therefore asks the population to remain attentive to official alerts and follow the recommendations of Civil Protection.

Simon weakens in the Pacific

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Simon remains stationary in the Pacific Ocean, about 325 kilometers west-southwest of Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco, and 430 kilometers south-southeast of Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur.

The system has maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 110 kilometers per hour.

However, due to its weakening, Simon no longer poses a threat to Mexican territory, according to the SMN.

Authorities are maintaining surveillance of both systems and reiterate the call to exercise extreme caution regarding the expected rains in the south of the country, especially in areas susceptible to flooding and landslides.
