The president of Iran adopted a defiant tone on Wednesday at the UN, where he spoke for the first time since Washington and Israel launched an all-out war against his country, and told the United States that Tehran will not kneel.
Masoud Pezeshkian also accused Washington of "terrorism" for the assassination in late February of the former supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The president showed a photograph of the deceased leader to the UN General Assembly, before repeating that Tehran did not initiate this conflict that has expanded across the Middle East.
The day before, United States President Donald Trump declared from the same podium at the organization's headquarters in New York that he is weighing the option of "obliterating" Iran, but subsequently praised the resumption of talks between Tehran and Washington.
Pezeshkian did not mention the meetings on the sidelines of the UN summit to end the conflict.
"(United States President Donald Trump) must know that the resistance of the Iranian people will only increase in the face of sanctions, increased pressure, and increased intimidation. We will never bow our heads nor will we kneel," he stated.
Pezeshkian also declared that his government will not allow the Strait of Hormuz to be used to carry out aggression against his country.
In response to the February 28 attacks against Iran, Tehran blocked this maritime passage, vital for the global hydrocarbon trade.
The closure of this passage has caused an earthquake in the markets and widespread inflation due to the rise in oil prices.
This has become one of the main threats facing Trump's Republican Party ahead of the midterm legislative elections in November, in which they could lose control of the United States Congress.
"We cannot allow some to have free access and defend their interests through that waterway, while, at the same time, they use that waterway to impose their aggression upon us," the Iranian president stated.
