United States President Donald Trump, threatened this Tuesday, during his address to the UN General Assembly, to use military force in Latin America if he sees his country's interests threatened.
"The United States will no longer allow threats against the country to take hold anywhere on the American continent. And, if necessary, we will use our unmatched military might to protect the national interests of the United States," he warned.
Trump cited as an example the U.S. military operation on January 3 in Caracas, in which Nicolás Maduro was arrested and deposed, now a prisoner in a New York jail where he faces drug trafficking charges.
Since that day, the American leader said, "hundreds of political prisoners have been released," and he assured that work is being done for a "much better future for the Venezuelan people," while also highlighting the agreement by which the United States will control part of Venezuela's oil reserves.
The United States placed special emphasis on the fight against drug trafficking, asserting that cartels are "the IS (Islamic State) of the American continent" because "they torture and extort as an instrument of terror."
"Just like the IS, they should be eliminated, exiled, or detained as enemy combatants with no possibility of release, which is what we are doing," the president added, while claiming credit for his bombing campaign against boats allegedly transporting drugs in the Caribbean Sea.
