A New Zealand politician became a trending topic after starring in an unusual moment during a work video call: the official joined the Zoom meeting from her home bathroom, which caused surprise among the attendees and triggered a wave of reactions on social media.
It all happened last Monday during a Dunedin City Council meeting, when Mayor Sophie Barker noted that two councilors would be attending online, including Councilor Jo Galer. "We still can't see them. They're on the other side of the world, so it might take us a little while," Barker mentioned.
Some time later and quite suddenly, Galer appeared, but not in her office or at her home desk, but in the bathroom. Jo Galer burst into the Zoom call with a: "Can you hear me?", which sparked comments from the other meeting attendees.
"Yes," the mayor replied and added: "Perhaps you should move the camera." "Why? Where is it?" Galer replied. "We can see your laundry hanging," Barker explained. "Eh, okay... can you see me? Great! My laundry is visible, I'm visible. No problem," replied the councilor, who continued with the video call as if nothing had happened and from the same spot, she did not move.
While Galer spoke about local government reform, a shadow appeared behind a glass shower door, which drew even more attention and raised questions about the fact that the woman was not alone in that bathroom.
It is unclear why she decided to make the call from her home shower since Galer did not explain it, nor did she clarify who the person behind her was.
On social media, some internet users took the moment with humor and made memes, while others pointed out that the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of checking where you are connecting from for a virtual meeting.
