The lifeless body of a federal congressman was found this Friday by Mexican authorities, who indicated that he had a gunshot wound.
Legislator Zenyazen Escobar was inside his vehicle and a firearm was found near him, the Secretary of Government of the state of Veracruz reported in a press conference; Veracruz is one of the most violent states in Mexico due to the presence of criminal gangs linked to drug trafficking.
"The death was caused by a firearm, we cannot expand" on the hypothesis, said Secretary Ricardo Ahued, without stating whether it was a murder or a suicide.
He ruled out for the moment that the vehicle had been attacked or forced to stop.
"It was not an attack because the car is on the side, there is no sign that there was any major aggression against the vehicle, it was internal," Ahued detailed, noting that the state prosecutor's office has already begun investigations.
The body of Escobar, who was 42 years old, was on the driver's side of the car found on the side of the road.
In images released by local media, a firearm can be seen between the legislator's legs. The police cordoned off the area.
Escobar was a teacher by profession, a teachers' union leader, and Secretary of Education of Veracruz (2018-2021). He arrived at the Chamber of Deputies in September 2024.
