A shooting at an elementary school in the state of Oregon, United States, left "multiple victims" this Thursday, police reported, while several local media outlets reported three children and one adult deceased.
"At this time, we have multiple victims," said Sheila Miller, police department spokesperson, in a press conference.
Police indicated that the perpetrator of the shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School, located in the town of Bend, Oregon, had died.
"We do not have confirmation yet on who shot the suspect. It could have been a bystander," added the spokesperson.
Both CNN and CBS News reported that three children and one adult died in the shooting, citing anonymous law enforcement sources. Authorities have not yet confirmed this information.
"There are children among the victims," Miller had stated earlier, without detailing whether they were dead or injured.
At least two people were transported to a nearby hospital in this northwestern state. "We do not know their status," the spokesperson noted.
Silver Rail Elementary School is under lockdown following the shooting, the school district office in the town of Bend, Oregon, indicated in a statement released on social media.
It later reported that law enforcement was escorting students on buses to another location where family members could reunite with their children.
Officers received an alert to respond to a critical scene at 1:00 PM local time, where police arrived approximately two minutes later, Miller said.
"Seconds later, we received information over the radio that the suspect in this incident had gone down," she added.
The school is about 160 kilometers southeast of the city of Portland. It serves elementary school students from kindergarten through fifth grade.
The United States is a frequent scene of gun violence. Thousands of people lose their lives every year in this country where firearms are easily accessible.
The deadliest school shooting in U.S. history occurred at Virginia Tech on April 16, 2007, when a South Korean student killed 32 people and wounded 17 others before taking his own life.
So far this year, there have been more than 360 mass shootings in the United States, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which uses that term when four or more people are killed in the incident.
