Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum asserted this Thursday that traveling to the country is "safe," in response to a warning issued by the United Kingdom advising its citizens not to visit several Mexican states and warning about an increase in mobile phone thefts during the World Cup, just days before the round of 16 match between Mexico and England in the Mexican capital.
"It is safe to visit the country, there is no problem," the president declared at her daily press conference from Mexico City.
The British government's alert advises against non-essential travel to areas in the states of Chihuahua (north), Sinaloa (northwest), Tamaulipas (northeast), Zacatecas (center), Guanajuato (center), Michoacán (west), Jalisco (west), Colima (west), Guerrero (south), Chiapas (south), and Baja California (northwest).
Likewise, it warned its citizens that four people died in crowds during World Cup celebrations, while also cautioning about the increase in mobile phone thefts and cases of drink spiking in the context of the sports tournament.
Without commenting specifically on this alert, the Mexican president stated that authorities are "taking measures to put up more screens" on Paseo de la Reforma, the capital's main street, so that "there is no congregation of people in certain places, but rather they can disperse."
This decision, she added, follows the "regrettable death" of three people from asphyxia during the World Cup festivities, while another person died in a hospital after suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest during the celebration of the national team's victory.
"I have called on all the fans, all those who watch the match, both here in the Zócalo and in other places, to act responsibly. Trust the people, avoid excess alcohol, and act responsibly," Sheinbaum said.
Despite what happened, the president insisted that there is "no problem" for people traveling to Mexico just days before the national team faces England in the round of 16 match to be held in the country's capital.
"There are police mainly to provide guidance, as well as various Mexico City government authorities and our own officials to guide the fans who are going to watch the match. And I call on everyone to act responsibly," she concluded. EFE
