The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, highlighted this Wednesday the victories of two politicians of Mexican origin in the United States midterm elections, Xavier Becerra, in California; and Gina Hinojosa, in Texas, and considered that the results, which represented a strong defeat for the Republican party of President Donald Trump, reflect "a sentiment" of the population of that country.

"Well, I think it shows a sentiment of the American people. And I would like to highlight the triumph of two people of Mexican origin, who are the governor-elect of California and the governor-elect of Texas," the president expressed during her morning press conference.

The Mexican leader highlighted that both politicians have family ties to Mexico and celebrated that members of the Mexican-American community are reaching positions of political relevance in the neighboring country.

"Both have, whether it is both parents, mother and father, or one of them born in Mexico. And they have a bond with, obviously, their state, their proposal, but also a bond with the Mexican people. And well, it gives us great pleasure that Mexican-Americans who are there have this participation and this recognition," she added.

Sheinbaum's statements come after the Democrats managed to regain control of both chambers of the U.S. Congress in an election that also left historic results for minorities.

In California, Democrat Xavier Becerra, the son of Mexican immigrants and former Secretary of Health and Human Services during the Joe Biden Administration (2021-2025), defeated Republican Steve Hilton and will become the first Latino governor of the state in more than 150 years.

Becerra, 68, will succeed Democrat Gavin Newsom at the helm of the most populous state in the United States, where the Latino community represents more than 40% of the population.

Meanwhile, in Texas, Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican Governor Greg Abbott, who was seeking a fourth consecutive term, and became the first woman and the first person of Latino origin elected to govern that state on the border with Mexico.

Her victory ended more than three decades of Republican governments in Texas, one of the main conservative bastions in the United States.

Regarding the possible repercussions of the election results on the bilateral relationship, Sheinbaum avoided anticipating whether pressure from Washington on Mexico would increase or decrease and asked to wait.

"We, regardless of the election result, as you know, always seek the best relationship with the United States, always guaranteeing respect for our sovereignty, territorial integrity, and collaboration without subordination," she affirmed.

The president assured that this position guides the bilateral relationship in trade and security matters, and specified that conversations with Washington on trade issues continue as normal.

The midterm elections were held in a context of political tension over the migration and economic policies of US President Donald Trump, whose party suffered defeats in several key states.
