A powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck China's Tibet region this Thursday night, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported, though there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The epicenter of the quake, which was recorded at 10:33 PM local time (14:33 GMT), was located about 190 kilometers east-northeast of Nagqu and 390 kilometers northeast of Lhasa. The tremor had a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.

The China Earthquake Administration activated a level II emergency response, the state news agency Xinhua reported in a brief dispatch.

Earthquakes are relatively frequent in China. In January 2025, at least 126 people died in an earthquake that struck the rural district of Tingri, in Tibet.
