U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday tariffs of up to 100% on imports of drones and their components, an industry dominated by China.
The president justified the decision based on national security grounds, according to a statement from the White House.
A 100% tax will be applied to unmanned aircraft systems with a takeoff weight exceeding 25 kilos, those equipped with thermal cameras, drone docking stations, and other components.
Additionally, a 25% tariff is expected for smaller drones.
According to Trump, the goal is to "encourage production" of drones in the United States and "reduce reliance" on foreign suppliers.
The Chinese company DJI, founded in 2006, has captured more than two-thirds of the global drone markets in recent years, according to several studies.
These new tariffs are mostly set to take effect on September 3.
