During a brief press conference in Texas, Trump, when asked about the case of Pike, the first woman sentenced to death in Tennessee in 200 years, considered that the execution "shouldn't be that hard."
The president expressed his astonishment and said it was an execution where "the drug didn't work properly," and he decided not to comment further, asserting that it is a matter that concerns the state where the unexpected event took place.
Christa Pike survived two lethal doses of pentobarbital during her execution on Wednesday and is in critical condition, according to her lawyers who have requested that her sentence be commuted.
The 50-year-old woman had been on death row in Tennessee for nearly three decades after being convicted of murder in 1996, and she was set to become the first woman executed since 1819.
According to journalists who witnessed the execution, Pike's breathing could be heard for nearly an hour after she received the injections before they were forced to leave the scene.
For their part, state prison authorities have asserted that the protocol established by law for Pike's execution was followed and that no "additional procedures" are permitted beyond those that were performed during the execution, which allows for two rounds of the lethal pentobarbital injection.
This Thursday, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announced a temporary suspension of executions scheduled for 2026, and according to local media, Pike's case is the second execution this year.
