What is rabies and how is it transmitted to humans?

Rabies is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system and can be transmitted from infected animals to people.

The virus is transmitted mainly through bites or when the saliva of an infected animal comes into contact with open wounds or mucous membranes, such as the eyes and mouth.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), rabies is fatal in almost all cases once clinical symptoms appear. However, it can be prevented through immediate medical care and post-exposure prophylaxis when indicated.

SYMPTOMS

Among the symptoms that may occur are fever, headache, general malaise, and neurological disturbances.

For this reason, health authorities recommend not waiting for symptoms to appear before seeking medical attention following potential exposure.
