American musician Abraham 'A.B.' Quintanilla has sued his sister Suzette for one million dollars, accusing her of failing to distribute all the shared profits from the royalties of their late sister, Selena, as revealed by People magazine on Tuesday.
Public records show that A.B. Quintanilla, creator of groups like the Kumbia Kings, filed the lawsuit against Suzette on September 10 in the Nueces County court in Texas, but the U.S. media outlet obtained the court documents that reveal the amount in dispute today.
According to People, the documents show that Abraham accuses his sister of mismanagement of the company Q. Productions Inc., which was created by Suzette to manage the estate and royalties of the late 'Queen of Tex-Mex,' who was murdered in 1995 at the peak of her career.
A.B. asserts that the mismanagement by his sister, with whom he played in the band Selena y Los Dinos, has cost him more than $1 million, which is the amount he is seeking, according to the report.
The lawsuit alleges that after Selena's death, her family members and her husband, Chris Pérez, agreed to divide the profits from her entertainment rights, of which A.B. is entitled to one-quarter of the net income.
In 2016, Abraham appointed Suzette as the executive director of the company, and she has been in charge of managing the earnings and revenue since then, but A.B. now claims he has not received everything he is owed, the report added.
The plaintiff had noted on his Instagram that "the lawsuit is part of a process that began some months ago, but what led to this point did not start a few months ago."
"It comes from years. Years of accumulated situations, decisions, and circumstances that for a long time I chose to keep quiet about out of respect, loyalty, and, above all, because it was my own family," he explained in the note that is still available on his account @abquintanilla3
