What is ‘Ley de Fuego,’ the book by Inés Gómez Mont, about?
The novel Ley de Fuego went on sale on September 11, 2026, and consists of 815 pages. According to the synopsis, the novel follows Carlota Torres, a Mexican criminal defense attorney. While practicing, her life takes a turn when she must defend Emilio Zárate, a businessman accused of heading a criminal organization; during her work, Torres faces a series of conflicts, family secrets, and plenty of drama.
In the novel's dedications, Gómez Mont reserved a special message for her seven children, whom she considers her main motivation: “To my children, my reason, my strength, and the greatest love of my life. Everything, always, is for you,” she wrote. She also thanked her parents and relatives for the support they represent in her life.
What are Inés Gómez Mont and her husband accused of, and why is she a fugitive?
In January 2022, the FGR announced an international search in 194 countries for Inés Gómez Mont and her husband Álvarez Puga for crimes of diversion of funds, assets and resources, money laundering, and tax evasion.
At the time, reports of these crimes captured media attention given that the federal authority revealed the amount involved in all the illicit operations investigated and linked to both figures amounted to 2.5 billion pesos.
The investigations that were carried out revealed the involvement of other people, in addition to Álvarez Puga and Gómez Mont, in a network of simulated operations, which were allegedly designed to facilitate tax evasion and the diversion of public resources. The companies involved were reportedly used to disguise transactions and justify illegal financial movements.
To clarify the facts, authorities issued arrest warrants against the couple, while Interpol activated a red notice for their international search; however, Inés Gómez Mont and Víctor Álvarez Puga fled four months before the FGR made their modus operandi public and the first formal accusations were made.
Regarding the Interpol red notice, President Claudia Sheinbaum revealed that the corresponding authorities had deactivated it.
