The love story between Charles and Diana has sparked controversy once again 45 years after their wedding. Charles Spencer, the princess's brother, asserts in his new book that the then-Prince Charles had confessed to his future wife, one day before their wedding, that he was not in love with her.
The revelation appears in Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, the memoir published by Spencer, in which he reconstructs his sister's life from his own perspective.
This book has caused controversy in the United Kingdom and around the world, especially because Earl Spencer's anecdotes reaffirm the theory that British royal fans have held for years: that Diana suffered within the royal family and that they were insensitive following Lady Di's death in 1997.
According to Spencer's account, Charles told Diana that he was willing to marry her and that he felt happy about the wedding, but that he was not in love with her.
In the book, the earl wrote that Diana's love for Charles was not reciprocated as she had hoped, and he recounted that he visited his sister on the morning of her wedding, July 29, 1981, while she was getting ready at Clarence House; he noted that "her face reflected a nostalgic melancholy."
"Long after, I discovered that, just as she had confided to a close friend, her fiancé had told her the day before that she should know he was very happy to marry her, but that in reality, he was not in love with her (...) Diana had to come to terms with that hard blow, while having the certainty that Prince Charles was entering his marriage with his heart elsewhere," he recounted.
The episode is particularly significant because, according to the book, Diana already had doubts about whether she should go through with the union.
A few years ago, a version surfaced asserting that Diana was deeply worried about the relationship and about Charles's feelings toward her. Her father, John Spencer, allegedly intervened to convince her to continue with the union due to the enormous impact that canceling a royal wedding would have just days before it was to be celebrated.
