The Greenville County Coroner's Office in South Carolina (United States) reported this Tuesday that actress Hayden Panettiere passed away from an accidental overdose caused by a cocktail of substances that included fentanyl.

Other drugs found in her system, in addition to fentanyl, included the synthetic precursor 4-ANPP, the psychotropic alprazolam, the muscle relaxant methocarbamol, and the antipsychotic quetiapine, the coroner's office explained, stating that the autopsy did not reveal "any signs of trauma" that would have contributed to the death of the performer, who became famous for her role as the cheerleader in the television series 'Heroes' (2006-2010).
Fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid used for pain relief and also as an anesthetic, combined with the rest of the substances proved lethal.
According to the forensic analysis, 4-ANPP, a fentanyl precursor commonly found in some illegal drugs, was found in Panettiere's body; along with alprazolam, an anxiety medication available under the brand name Xanax; methocarbamol, a muscle relaxant (which requires a prescription for purchase); and finally, quetiapine, an antipsychotic medication used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder.
The 36-year-old actress passed away on August 16 at the apartment of her boyfriend, actor Brian Hickerson, in the town of Greenville.
The causes of death had been under investigation since then, although authorities quickly ruled out any signs of foul play.
According to information published at the time by People magazine, during the 911 call made when the performer was found unconscious, personnel can be heard speaking of an "overdose" and "cardiac arrest."
Hickerson and his brother were at the South Carolina residence when authorities declared the actress dead.
The boyfriend provided investigators with a bag of medications, according to authorities cited by the Los Angeles-based magazine.
Panettiere lived in Los Angeles, but Hickerson is a native of Greenville, a place that the New York-born actress visited constantly.
