American actor Walter Koenig, who played the Russian crew member Pavel Chekov in the 'Star Trek' science fiction universe, passed away at 90 in Los Angeles, as reported this Monday by Variety.

"We mourn the passing of Walter Koenig, whose talent, warmth, and unforgettable performances left an indelible mark on generations of fans around the world," the artist's representatives stated in a release shared with the specialized media outlet.

The actor passed away last night at his home, located in the North Hollywood neighborhood, due to advanced age, surrounded by his daughter and niece, the statement added.

Koenig made his way in Hollywood after playing the iconic role of Pavel Chekov in the original 'Star Trek' series (1966-1969), in which he participated in two seasons (second and third) and whose role he reprised in the first 7 films of the saga that were released between 1979 and 1991.

His role, a young arrogant man who was used to ridicule the Soviet custom of falsely taking credit for every important human invention in the context of the Cold War, was focused on attracting teenage audiences to television.

Born on September 14, 1936, in the city of Chicago, the performer grew up in Manhattan as the son of Lithuanian immigrants and starred in plays like 'Peer Gynt' or 'The Devil's Disciple' before moving to Los Angeles to obtain a degree in psychology.

Koenig was also linked to the 'Babylon 5' fiction franchise, in which he played the evil police officer Alfred Bester between 1994 and 1998.
