Puerto Rican reggaeton artist Wisin, known as 'The Survivor' of reggaeton, announced this Tuesday with "great pride and commitment" the creation of the University of Perreo (UDP).
"I feel a personal responsibility to elevate our culture and protect the legacy of a movement that changed the industry forever. That is why today, with great pride and commitment, I officially announce the creation of a new institution dedicated to the study, preservation, and dissemination of our history: UNIVERSITY OF PERREO (UDP)," the artist expressed on his social media.
"After more than three decades of a musical career, of seeing how our sound was born in the street and expanded to conquer every corner of the world, I have understood that our history is too big to stay only on the stages," added Juan Luis Morera, the singer's birth name.
Likewise, the performer of hits such as 'Pegao', 'Rakata', 'Pam Pam', 'Paleta', 'Sexy Movimiento' or 'Mírala Bien' indicated that the mission is to give reggaeton "the rigor and the place of respect it deserves" and he will provide more information soon.
The institution already has its official website where a 15-day countdown appears.
Reggaeton went from being a censored genre in Puerto Rico in its beginnings since the late eighties, to dominating world music thanks to collaborations between prominent artists and fusions with other genres.
