Hugo Sánchez has revealed that he sees the Mexican National Team as having the potential to be world champions under the leadership of Rafa Márquez. However, he does not believe it could happen soon, but rather after a 12-year project.
During a broadcast of ESPN's Futbol Picante, the former Pumas and Real Madrid goalscorer showed his support for Rafa and explained that for the project to work, it needs to be long-term.
"I support Rafa, the decision is that the people he trusts the most are them (his coaching staff); we must back him because he is putting his prestige and his future on the line, he is putting on the line that they support him during this four-year period, at least, because the ideal would be what I requested at the time, of three World Cup stages."
Sánchez, who was the national team's coach for 16 months, considered that if Rafa remains as head coach of El Tri for three World Cup cycles, Mexico could get closer to the possibility of becoming world champions.
"If we keep Rafa for three World Cup stages because he is doing a good job, which I hope is the case, that is where we could get closer to thinking about the possibility of becoming world champions," he revealed.
In addition, Sánchez expressed that Andrés Guardado, who is part of Rafa Márquez's coaching staff, could prepare during that time to become his successor.
"Watch what I say: if we keep Rafa Márquez and Andrés and his work team... that Andrés Guardado will already be preparing himself to think about that possibility. To do it the German style, so he goes about preparing himself to be the future coach of the national team."
