The only essential requirement is that the document be valid during the period they will remain in U.S. territory.
For example, if a person has a trip scheduled to New York from November 1st to November 7th, 2026, their passport only needs to remain valid until at least the return date. This means they do not need to have validity until May 2027, as many travelers believe.
What is the Six-Month Club?
The so-called Six-Month Club is made up of dozens of countries whose citizens are exempt from the general rule that requires six additional months of passport validity to enter the United States. Among these countries is Mexico, along with nations such as Canada, Spain, France, Germany, Japan, Australia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and the United Kingdom, among many others.
For travelers from these countries, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) establishes that the passport must be valid only for the intended length of stay in U.S. territory.
Passport validity can affect your stay
Although there is no requirement for six additional months of validity, the expiration date of your passport is still an important factor. At the time of entry into the United States, the CBP officer evaluates your documentation and determines how long you can legally remain in the country.
If your passport is nearing expiration, the officer may limit your period of stay to end before the document's expiration date. In other words, even if you have a valid visa, you will not be able to stay longer than your passport's validity allows.

The role of Form I-94
When entry is made by land and the visitor plans to travel more than 40 kilometers (approximately 25 miles) inside the United States or stay for more than 30 days, it is generally required to process Form I-94.
This document records the date of entry into the country and the maximum date by which the visitor must leave U.S. territory. Additionally, it helps authorities track the entries and exits of travelers who arrive for tourism, business, study, or work purposes.
For those arriving on commercial flights or vessels, the registration is usually done automatically by the airline or carrier.
