One week into the 2026-2027 school year for basic education in Mexico, people are already talking about the first days off, especially because the celebrations for Independence Day on September 15 and 16 are approaching.
If you have children in preschool, elementary, or middle school in institutions incorporated with the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP), you should know the following regarding what is established in the official calendar for breaks and long weekends.

Will there be classes on Wednesday, September 16, in Mexico?
According to the official SEP calendar, there will be NO classes on Wednesday, September 16, as the date is marked as a "suspension of teaching duties" because the start of Mexico's Independence is celebrated.
Do you get paid double if you work on September 16, according to the LFT?
In addition to being a day off for academic activities, the Federal Labor Law (LFT) officially establishes it as a mandatory day of rest for the Mexican workforce.
In the event that work is required on one of these days, the employer and their employees must agree on the number of people who will provide their services and they must provide extra pay.
In this sense, workers will have to attend their workplaces, but they have the right to receive their standard salary plus a double salary for the service provided, which in the end results in triple pay.
In accordance with Article 75 of the LFT, people who show up to work as usual during a mandatory day of rest, whether it is September 16 or any other marked date, "will have the right to receive, independently of the salary corresponding to them for the mandatory rest, a double salary for the service provided."
Will there be classes on Tuesday, September 15? What does the LFT say?
As mentioned, for basic education students and the Mexican workforce, the day off that mandates rest will be September 16, but this will not warrant a vacation long weekend in the strict sense because it falls on a weekday, a Wednesday, and the suspension of activities will only be on that day.
Schools incorporated with the SEP could determine whether there will be activities on Tuesday, September 15, a date marked on the calendar as a day of "reflection" for commemorative days.
So far, the secretariat has not confirmed the suspension for Tuesday the 15th, and the LFT does not recognize the date in its calendar of mandatory rest days.
