Microsoft co-founder proposes creating a category of "human-reserved" jobs that cannot be replaced by artificial intelligence (AI), even if machines are capable of performing them, to address the impact of the technology.

In an essay published this Wednesday on his blog 'Gates Notes', the tycoon-turned-philanthropist proposes "reserving jobs" for humans when a person's presence has "special value."

Among the examples he mentions are childcare, while in fields such as education and health, he advocates for "keeping people at the forefront" and using AI as a support tool.

"There was something about the care my father received that was irreplaceably human. No robot could or should have done it," he notes, recalling the caregivers who tended to his father during the final stages of Alzheimer's.

Gates argues that the question should not just be what jobs a machine can do, "but which ones should continue to be performed by people."

As an example, he points out that an AI might be able to tell a patient they have an incurable disease, but that does not mean it should be the one to do so.

The businessman suggests that some jobs could be "permanently protected," while others could be "temporarily reserved to facilitate the transition of workers" who have been in a profession for decades.

"We have to think now about how to reduce job losses so that everyone can share in the prosperity that AI will generate," he writes.

According to Gates, "up to 40% of jobs could fall into some kind of human-reserved category," although he acknowledges that "determining which jobs should be protected and who should make that decision poses many difficulties."

The Microsoft co-founder also proposes modifying the tax system to "tax automation," including the tokens used by AI systems and robots, with the goal of "offsetting the loss of tax revenue from replacing workers and funding training and social protection programs."

He also calls for the creation of national and international frameworks to regulate AI, which he warns can "facilitate biological and cyber attacks against hospitals, water systems, or power grids" by "empowering malicious actors." EFE
