Business magnate Elon Musk promised this Monday that he will gift one share of his aerospace company, SpaceX, to every child in the United States next year.
"Next year, I will gift one of my SpaceX shares to every child in the United States," he stated in a post on X, adding:
"This will be the first of many." Musk did not provide further details regarding the transfer or the conditions of the alleged gift.
According to the latest Census Bureau estimate, there are 72 million minors under 18 in the United States. Following the company's IPO last June, the world's richest man retained between 42% and 43% of the company's shares.
SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell announced last July that she and her husband would donate one of their SpaceX shares to each of more than two million minors through Trump accounts. Unlike Musk's proposal, Shotwell's was specifically dedicated to minors between the ages of 11 and 17 living in areas with lower average household incomes, with special focus on those living near her home in Central Texas.
Last Friday, the company's shares closed at $146.03. If that price were maintained at the time of the transfer, it would amount to an operation valued at more than $10.5 billion.
This is not the first time Musk has promised gifts. During the last presidential election campaign, he announced he would give away one million dollars daily to registered voters in any of the battleground states between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris who signed a petition in favor of "free speech and the right to bear arms."
SpaceX is scheduled to release its latest quarterly financial results this Tuesday.
In its first earnings report, presented in August, the aerospace and artificial intelligence (AI) company reported a net loss of $5.488 billion in the first half of 2026, a 257% year-over-year increase.
