Eleven mountaineers died in an avalanche in the Russian Caucasus, the Ministry of Emergency Situations reported on Monday.
The avalanche, which occurred on Sunday in the Bezengi Gorge, known for its mountains and glacier, surprised a group of 33 mountaineers, according to the source.
On social media, witnesses posted images of an impressive snow avalanche rushing down this gorge in Kabardino-Balkaria under a blue sky.
"Regrettably, 11 people died" and six others were injured, the ministry indicated, noting that 10 mountaineers managed to descend safely, while the whereabouts of another six remain unknown.
On Monday morning, 56 rescuers were participating in the search efforts at the site, according to the same source.
The Bezengi Gorge is surrounded by some of the highest mountains in the central Caucasus, with peaks ranging from 4,000 to 5,200 meters in altitude. The region is also home to the impressive Bezengi glacier.
