Two prisoners died on Friday in a new riot at a prison in the violent Mexican state of Sinaloa, where 10 people died the day before in another confrontation.

The prison is located in the tourist city of Mazatlán, which has been plagued by drug-related violence.

The Sinaloa Ministry of Public Security reported the death toll and said it "implemented a device that brought the situation under control."

It is not clear whether the detainees died from gunfire, as in the incident on Thursday, which caused the deaths of nine inmates and a minor who was visiting. The Secretary of Security, Sinuhé Téllez, explained at the time that 9 mm weapons were used.

Authorities have also not specified the motive for the riot.

Thursday's confrontation also left 16 injured, nine of whom have already been discharged, the regional government said.

Several members of the are imprisoned in the state's jails, which is embroiled in an internal war that has already left more than 1,000 dead since 2024.

On May 31, seven prisoners died inside a prison in Culiacán, the state capital.
