Following his formal indictment for the multiple homicide in Atizapán de Zaragoza, State of Mexico, Diego Sebastián ‘N’ could be left without lawyers, according to journalist Pablo Ferri of El País. Why? What happened with his defense?
According to statements obtained by Ferri from lawyer Rodrigo Pastrana, prior to the hearing where the alleged murderer was formally charged, Diego ‘N’ could be left without a defense due to public pressure, death threats he has been subjected to, and ethical issues.
Pastrana pointed out that his withdrawal from the case was “almost a fact” for the aforementioned reasons, and because he and his team were not defending the crime against keyboardist Jonathan ‘Honas’ Meléndez and his family, but rather the person accused of it.
“We want to make it clear that we are not defending a homicide, but a person accused of homicide,” he noted, adding: “The continuity of our representation depends on our clients' understanding of the matter and the extent to which they follow our recommendations.”

Regarding the possibility of abandoning the case, Pastrana revealed that his client has been “out of it” and has “lost his mind” after being admitted to the Barrientos Prison: “Sebastián lost his mind. We have interviewed him after Saturday's hearing and he is a person who is out of it.”
As he explained, the accused has suffered hallucinations and lives in an altered reality, possibly due to being abused inside the prison over the last few days, though not necessarily by the guards: “This guy has been beaten and tortured for more than six days, and those blows are possibly driving him crazy, too. When a person is like this, it is very difficult to explain anything to them. He is not 100% capable of understanding and making decisions. From there, it is as if you were trying to defend a piece of furniture.”
“We do not agree on certain principles, values, and understanding of things with Sebastián and his family,” the lawyer noted, pointing out that the suspect's family has asked him to follow certain defense lines that do not align with his professional ethics or the truth of what happened.
“There are things that we, as guarantors of the process, are willing to do, and there are others that we are not,” he pointed out.
The next hearing for Diego Sebastián ‘N’ will be on January 9, 2027, the date by which the investigation period for the multiple homicide in Atizapán—where Camilo Séptimo musician Jonathan ‘Honas’ Meléndez lost his life along with his family—will have concluded.
According to the Attorney General of the State of Mexico, there is evidence for both defendants, Diego Sebastián ‘N’ and his alleged accomplice Gerardo ‘N’, to be prosecuted for the following charges:
- Homicidio calificado de Meléndez con agravantes de premeditación, ventaja y alevosía.
- Homicidio calificado de Ana Paula (esposa del tecladista), Aleyda Romero (trabajadora doméstica), y la menor de tres años, Sofía (hija de Meléndez).
- Delito de la interrupción materno-infantil violenta, debido al estado de gestación de Ana Paula.
- Delito de crueldad contra seres sintientes, debido al asesinato de una de sus mascotas.
During these four months of investigation, the defendants will remain in preventive detention at the Barrientos Prison.
