An explosion due to gas accumulation occurred on the morning of Friday, January 9, 2026, in a building in the Paseos de Taxqueña neighborhood, in the Coyoacán borough of Mexico City. The blast caused considerable material damage and mobilized firefighters, emergency services, and police forces of the capital.
According to initial reports, 2,500 people were evacuated from approximately 280 apartments as a preventive measure to avoid greater risks, while Civil Protection, SSC-CDMX, and ERUM personnel carried out response and assessment work in the affected area.
The detonation was presumably caused by a leak of gas accumulated inside an apartment, which triggered a loud blast that affected several levels of the building and launched debris outside.
Members of the Heroic Fire Department of Mexico City, as well as ERUM (Rescue and Medical Emergency Squad) teams and the SSC-CDMX, arrived at the scene to control the situation, evacuate the occupants, and provide first aid.
The explosion left visible structural damage on several floors, with broken windows and debris on the sidewalk, causing authorities to cordon off the area to avoid additional risks and proceed to evacuate neighboring apartments.
