Brazilian senator Flávio Bolsonaro, a defeated candidate in last Sunday's Brazilian elections, fled to the United States this Tuesday after a judge forbade him from leaving the country, according to political sources cited by Brazilian media.
The Brazilian Federal Police canceled the passports of far-right senator Flávio Bolsonaro, a defeated candidate in the presidential elections, after he failed to comply with the court order to surrender them as part of an investigation, the country's public news agency reported this Tuesday.
On Monday, one day after losing the elections to the current leader, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Bolsonaro received an order to surrender his passports within 24 hours, which included a ban on leaving the country.
The decision was issued by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who presided over the trial in which Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years in prison for an attempted coup d'état.
After he failed to meet the deadline, the Federal Police canceled both documents, according to Agência Brasil.
Flávio is being investigated by the Supreme Court in a case for alleged money laundering, according to the newspapers O Estado de S. Paulo and O Globo. The case is under judicial seal.
At the center of the investigation is Willer Tomaz, a lawyer and close friend of Flávio, who is identified as the operator of a corporate structure with suspicious financial movements related to the world of sports betting.
According to the Police, cited by the press, Flávio was listed as a user with broad access permissions to a shared account with Tomaz, who is also under scrutiny by authorities for a corruption scandal related to improper deductions from the pensions of millions of retirees.
