The preventive measure applies to all educational levels in Los Cabos and Ciudad Constitución, according to Civil Protection authorities.
Where were classes suspended due to Hurricane Marie?
The suspension of educational activities for this Thursday, September 3, applies in:
- Los Cabos
- Ciudad Constitución, municipio de Comondú
In Los Cabos, the City Council reported that the suspension covers all educational levels and was taken as a preventive measure against the effects of the cyclone.
The Government of Baja California Sur also confirmed the suspension of educational activities in Los Cabos and Ciudad Constitución, while the State Civil Protection Council continues to monitor weather conditions.
Why were classes suspended?
The decision is related to the effects of Marie, which intensified into a category 1 hurricane in the Pacific.
According to the statement from Civil Protection, the system's circulation will favor intense localized rains, wind gusts, and high waves in Baja California Sur.
In addition, authorities are maintaining surveillance for possible increases in the level and force of the water, particularly in areas where currents and runoff may occur.
The Los Cabos City Council asked the population to avoid crossing streams during the rains and to exercise extreme caution with makeshift electrical installations.
Which states will have rain due to Marie?
Although the confirmed suspension of classes corresponds to municipalities in Baja California Sur, the Civil Protection statement warns that weather conditions will also favor rain in different regions of Mexico.
Very heavy localized rains accompanied by electrical storms are forecast in states such as Sonora, Sinaloa, Chihuahua, Durango, Nayarit, Zacatecas, Jalisco, Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Chiapas.
Strong localized rains are also expected in Nuevo León, Guanajuato, Querétaro, Hidalgo, Puebla, the State of Mexico, Veracruz, Tabasco, Campeche, and Yucatán, while other entities could register showers and possible hail.
Marie keeps Baja California Sur under surveillance
The system was located during the early hours of Thursday in the Pacific Ocean, about 610 kilometers southwest of Cabo San Lucas, and was moving west-northwest.
Although the center of the hurricane does not necessarily represent a direct impact on the Mexican coasts, its extensive circulation does favor intense rains in Baja California Sur, which is why authorities are maintaining constant monitoring.
In Los Cabos, additional preventive measures were also established, including the preparation of temporary shelters and patrols in high-risk areas.
