A man and a woman of Maya Tseltal origin were lynched and burned alive on Tuesday night in a community in the municipality of Ocosingo, in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, after being accused by residents of engaging in superstitious practices, state authorities confirmed to EFE.
According to testimonies gathered in the Las Tacitas community, the authors of which requested anonymity for security reasons, a group of residents detained the victims and took them to the town's main pavilion, where they were subjected to verbal and physical assault for several hours before being doused with fuel and burned.
Videos shared on social media show several people gathered while one of the victims, engulfed in flames, attempts to move around the area.
After the lynching, the bodies were abandoned on the outskirts of the community, on the side of a road, where they remained covered until the authorities arrived.
Family members of the victims demanded an investigation into the events and the arrest of those responsible, a request joined by traditional authorities from a Zapatista community in the area.
The Chiapas State Attorney General's Office (FGE), through the Indigenous Justice Prosecutor's Office, opened an investigation file into the lynching that took place in Las Tacitas.
The Indigenous District Prosecutor, Floralma Gómez Santos, confirmed that authorities have already established communication with the victims' families and are continuing investigations to clarify the facts and determine responsibilities.
