Machado used a gold-trimmed frame to display the Nobel medal she gifted to the president, writing at the top: "in gratitude for your extraordinary leadership in promoting peace," and adding that it was a token from the Venezuelan people for his actions to secure "their freedom," according to photos of the delivery at the White House published by the New York Post.
Trump and Machado had previously mentioned the presentation of the medal, which took place during a private lunch hosted by the Republican for the Venezuelan leader, with no details released regarding the topics discussed.
Following the meeting—the first encounter 12 days after the capture of President Nicolás Maduro in Caracas by U.S. armed forces—Machado stated that Trump was committed to the freedom of political prisoners and all Venezuelans.
On his Truth Social platform, the Republican described Machado as "a wonderful woman" and thanked her for the gift of the Nobel medal, calling it a "sign of mutual respect."
The Nobel medal, minted in gold and less than seven centimeters in diameter, bears a portrait of Alfred Nobel, a design that has remained virtually unchanged for more than 120 years.
Earlier on Thursday, before the meeting between Trump and Machado, the Nobel Peace Center emphasized on social media that the award "cannot be revoked, shared, or transferred to others," noting that "a medal can change owners, but the title of Nobel Peace Prize winner cannot."
