Mexico deployed 500 troops to the United States border after Washington reported that its forces had been fired upon in the region, President Claudia Sheinbaum reported on Monday.

The operation began in the state of Tamaulipas, which borders Texas, an area disputed by the Northeast and Gulf drug cartels, both of which have been designated as "foreign terrorist organizations" by Washington since February 2025.

Sheinbaum said in her daily press conference that the US government reported in writing "shots fired from the Mexican border toward the United States," but added that her administration has not received "any evidence."

"We do not have any evidence that has been provided to us that these gunshots actually took place," the leftist leader stated.

However, in response to the report of the aggression, the Mexican armed forces proposed to the US government that a military operation be carried out in the border area divided by the Rio Grande.

US Ambassador Ronald Johnson welcomed the operation on the social network X and added that the diplomatic mission is "helping to coordinate with the Mexican forces that are being deployed to the border area where shots were fired at members of the United States Coast Guard."

Since his return to the White House in 2025, President Donald Trump has been pressuring Mexico to strengthen its fight against drug trafficking and irregular migration across the border.

Trump has offered military support to Sheinbaum, but the president has rejected any United States intervention on several occasions.
