A 66-year-old Mexican tourist died this Friday at the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu after suffering a decompensation while taking photographs of the famous monument located in the Cusco region, in southern Peru, official sources reported.
The Decentralized Directorate of Culture of Cusco (DDC) indicated in a statement that the incident occurred at approximately 09:25 local time (14:25 GMT) this Friday, on one of the platforms of route 2 in the upper part of the terrace sector of the Inca citadel.
"The visitor Álvaro Sánchez Pérez, 66 years old and of Mexican nationality, suffered a decompensation while taking photographs during his visit," the regional agency attached to the Ministry of Culture indicated without giving further details on the cause of death.
It added that the staff of the Machu Picchu National Archaeological Park provided immediate assistance to the visitor and communicated the incident to the medical staff at the clinic located at the entrance of the Inca citadel, as well as to the Peruvian National Police.
"After the corresponding evaluation, it was confirmed that the visitor showed no signs of life. The incident was reported to the Public Prosecutor's Office for legal proceedings," the DDC stated while expressing "its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the visitor."
Machu Picchu is located at an altitude of 2,400 meters, 1,000 meters below the city of Cusco, where it is common for tourists to suffer from altitude sickness, known in Peru as 'soroche', which can be serious if the visitor has heart or respiratory problems.
