New Jersey Governor, Democrat Mikie Sherrill, disclosed on Tuesday that the state "mistakenly" registered 6,600 immigrants without U.S. citizenship on voter rolls between 2023 and 2024, and of these, about 400 voted in various elections.

Sherrill, on her X account, indicated that the registration was due to "a serious software error in the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission system" between June 2023 and 2024, and that the immigrants had indicated they were not citizens when applying for driver's licenses and identification cards.

"Our preliminary analysis shows that fewer than 400 people who were registered for the first time due to the error voted. They were registered as Democrats, Republicans, and unaffiliated voters, and they were spread throughout the state," the governor detailed.

Sherrill emphasized that the incident occurred during the previous administration of fellow Democrat Phil Murphy; that the system erroneously registered "non-citizens," so they are "not at fault," and that she has ordered an investigation and the removal of these individuals from the voter rolls.

Furthermore, she stated that she has "begun the process to replace the vendor responsible for managing the system."

The politician, who is a former federal prosecutor, denounced the "reckless errors" and "lack of transparency" of her predecessors, upheld "election integrity," and committed to holding those responsible accountable.

She also asserted that U.S. President, Republican Donald Trump, is trying to "undermine Americans' faith in elections by spreading lies about legitimate election results" and to "manipulate elections for his political benefit."

Trump has repeatedly questioned the integrity of the country's electoral system, and the Department of Homeland Security alleged last Friday without evidence that there were some 250,000 "non-citizens" registered to vote in the states of California, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Nevada.

In New Jersey, specifically, that agency estimated the figure exceeded 35,000 "non-citizens."
