The United States is monitoring reports of an infection at a laboratory in Russia, although it considers that there is no cause for alarm, Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated this Monday.

"Travel between the United States and Russia is very limited, obviously, but like anything else, something like this can get out and spread quickly," Rubio told the press shortly before departing for a visit to Iceland.

"We observe and monitor this closely. I don't think there is any reason to be alarmed, but there is reason to remain vigilant. And that is what we are doing," he added, referring to the concern generated by the death of an employee at an institute specializing in pneumonic plague in Siberia.

Russian authorities asserted this Monday that tests conducted after her death did not detect traces of the disease and that the situation is "under control."

The plague is an infectious disease caused by bacteria. Its pneumonic form is highly contagious and can be fatal if not treated quickly, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
