Russia is not preparing "for combat of any kind with Europe," but is weighing whether to resume direct negotiations with Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin assured on Friday.
"Many people in Europe say they expect aggression from the Russian Federation and that for this reason they must prepare for combat, for a war with Russia," he said on the sidelines of the International Cultural Forum in Saint Petersburg.

"But I would like to emphasize once again that we are not preparing for combat of any kind with Europe," he added.
However, the Russian president stated that Russia is reconsidering resuming peace negotiations with Ukraine, following the recent attacks by some 1,600 Ukrainian drones against the country on September 20, the last day of the legislative elections.
"Regarding the proposals to resume negotiations, yes, everything is on the table and everything is possible, but after everything they have done, we will reflect carefully on what steps we should take in response," Putin declared.
Mediation efforts undertaken by the United States since the return to power of Republican President Donald Trump led to several rounds of negotiations between Moscow and Kiev in 2025, but they have not borne fruit and the process has been stalled since the start of the war in the Middle East in February.
Until now, Moscow and Kiev have remained firm in their positions, especially on the issue of Ukrainian territories whose annexation Russia claims.
