The mayor of San Diego (California), Democrat Todd Gloria, demanded an apology this Tuesday from U.S. President Donald Trump, after he stated that Iran could "destroy" Los Angeles and San Diego "as a small price to pay" in the conflict with that country.
"President Trump should retract these statements and apologize to the people of San Diego," Gloria stated in a press release.
Trump made these statements on Monday during a rally in Grand Island, Nebraska, in support of Senator Pete Ricketts' campaign ahead of the November midterm elections; there, he expressed his desire to see a victory in the conflict with Iran and suggested that the country could "eliminate" San Diego and Los Angeles if it developed nuclear weapons.
"It's a small price to pay to keep the world safe, to keep our country safe," Trump said.
"Let them eliminate Los Angeles, let them eliminate San Diego. It is a very small price to pay, and it will all be over very soon," he continued.
The statements sparked a wave of criticism against the president, especially in San Diego, which hosts one of the largest U.S. military bases and amphibian training sites in the country.
"San Diegans deserve a president who values their lives, honors the service and sacrifice of our military families, and takes their responsibility as commander-in-chief seriously," the mayor added.
The White House has responded; communications director Steven Cheung said on his X account that the president was "clearly pointing out" that U.S. cities would have been threatened if a nuclear-capable Iran had not been stopped. EFE
