ICE raids ordered by Trump could drive up meat prices: U.S. ranchers warn

At least three associations representing ranchers in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas have warned that operations by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will cause an increase in beef prices for consumers due to the loss of workers in the sector.

The Kansas Livestock Association, Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association, and Texas Cattle Feeders Association issued a joint statement indicating that ICE raids on ranches "are creating a huge deterrent effect" among the documented and qualified workers who bring beef to the table and keep the livestock supply chain active.

The associations noted that sudden disruptions by immigration authorities on ranches can have immediate consequences for animal welfare, as well as operational and economic repercussions that extend beyond individual companies.

"This type of disruption will lead to an increase in beef prices for consumers," the groups warned.

The ranchers' statement becomes the latest criticism from the meat industry against the deportation campaign of President Donald Trump's administration, which seeks to expel at least one million immigrants from the country annually.

They reported that thousands of heads of cattle ready for the market, scheduled for shipment to processing plants, are now facing delays, which translates to revenue losses and additional costs amounting to millions of dollars.

They also reported labor force disruptions at numerous critical points in the supply chain.

"(The disruptions) represent a costly and unnecessary impact on livestock producers, who are already suffering the consequences of unwanted political interference in both markets and the physical supply chain," the ranchers stated.

Trump recently announced plans to suspend tariffs and import 300,000 metric tons of ground beef from countries like Argentina and Brazil, which sparked a wave of criticism from the U.S. livestock sector.

"We urge federal officials to carry out law enforcement actions in a legal, orderly, and transparent manner; to respect due process; and to communicate clearly with employers and affected communities," the organizations declared.
