Thousands of students at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) are wondering if the start of the 2026-2027 school year will change following the announcement of an in-person control exam, a requirement requested of some applicants as part of the enrollment process. Will the return to class be postponed, or will the current calendar be respected? Here is what is known.

Following the controversy generated by the alleged use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), identity theft, and external support during the 2026-2027/1 undergraduate entrance exam, authorities announced that a control exam will be administered to certain applicants (accepted applicants and applicants whose score was equal to or higher than the minimum required to enter the same major, campus, and modality between 2021 and 2026).

The objective, according to the rector of the UNAM, Leonardo Lomelí, is to verify that the results obtained truly correspond to the performance of the applicants. It is because of this newly announced measure that some students are wondering if the start of classes will be delayed or if activities will resume as planned in the official calendar.

¿La UNAM cambiará la fecha de inicio de clases en 2026?

No. Up to this point, the UNAM has not officially announced any modifications to the school calendar due to the implementation of the in-person control exam.

However, in a bulletin, the university stated that it plans to carry out the in-person control exam as soon as possible “to reduce the impact on the school calendar,” which suggests that dates could potentially change.

“The University, it added, had to offer a solution that simultaneously allows for the situation to be corrected as soon as possible, and to begin the semester without significantly altering the already approved school calendar,” specified the UNAM in its bulletin.

¿Cuándo inician las clases en la UNAM?

Based on the official UNAM school calendar, the start of the 2026-2027 school year is on Monday, August 10.

¿Dónde consultar información oficial?

The UNAM recommends exclusively checking the official portals of faculties, schools, and campuses. In this way, students will be able to avoid false information or rumors spread on social media.
