Next Saturday, September 19, the Second National Drill 2026 will take place at 12:00 PM (Central Mexico time), with the aim of “strengthening the preparation, coordination, and response capacity of the three levels of government... as well as promoting the active participation of society to reduce disaster risks,” according to Laura Velázquez Alzúa, head of the National Coordination of Civil Protection (CNPC).

The Second National Drill 2026 will be next Saturday, September 19 at 12:00 PM.
¿Cuáles serán las hipótesis sísmicas del simulacro?
For this Second National Drill, five seismic hypotheses are contemplated, including one with a magnitude of 7.7 in Puebla.
According to Laura Velázquez Alzúa, this scenario was chosen because “it is a physically possible event due to the interaction of the Cocos plate” and will allow for “rehearsing one of the most concerning scenarios for the nation's capital,” due to the “seismic amplification factor in soft soils and the shorter warning time of the alert”.
The five hypotheses are:
- Centro (escenario principal): magnitud 7.7, con epicentro en Tehuacán, Puebla.
- Noroeste: magnitud 7.1, con epicentro en Mexicali, Baja California.
- Noreste: magnitud 5.2, con epicentro en Ciudad de Allende, Nuevo León.
- Península de Yucatán: magnitud 7.0, con epicentro en Cabo Catoche, Quintana Roo.
- Golfo de Tehuantepec: magnitud 7.6, con epicentro en Tonalá, Chiapas.
¿Sonará la alerta sísmica en mi celular?
The seismic alert will not only be received via radio, television, and loudspeakers, but also through the cellular network.
To receive the alert on your cell phone, it will not be necessary to be connected to the internet. However, it is recommended to check the device settings to see if notifications for drill alerts are activated.
This is the message that will arrive along with the sound of the alert:
“Important NOTICE: Follow the instructions of Civil Protection. Important notice”.

According to El Informador, the seismic alert will be heard in the following entities of the country:
- Ciudad de México
- Estado de México
- Guerrero
- Oaxaca
- Puebla

¿Qué recomendaciones seguir durante el Segundo Simulacro Nacional 2026?
Cecilia Izcapa Treviño, Director of Risk Analysis and Management at the National Center for Disaster Prevention (Cenapred), gave the following recommendations for the Second National Drill 2026:
- Conocer cómo actuar antes, durante y después de un sismo.
- Identificar la alerta sísmica.
- Ubicar las rutas de evacuación y los puntos de reunión.
- Elaborar un plan familiar de protección civil.
- Consultar el Atlas Nacional de Riesgos (ANR).
