The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, offered her government's support to Colombia this Monday following the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that shook a large part of the South American country, leaving people injured and causing severe material damage, mainly in the department of Chocó.
“Of course, all the support that is required, if necessary, for the people of Colombia, we will be there,” the president affirmed during her morning press conference.
The Mexican leader assured that her administration remains aware of the situation as the emergency develops.
“We found out a moment ago about the serious earthquake in Colombia. We still do not have more information, but we are very attentive, both with our embassy there and with the ambassador here,” she declared.
The earthquake occurred at 07:34 local time (12:34 GMT) and its epicenter was in the town of San José del Palmar, in the department of Chocó, on the Colombian Pacific coast, according to initial reports from the Colombian Geological Service (SGC).
The tremor was felt in large areas of Colombia and caused damage especially in Quibdó, the capital of Chocó, where authorities reported people injured and buildings collapsed or with structural damage.
“We have just gone through a serious seismic event in the department of Chocó. Although the epicenter was in San José del Palmar, there are injuries and serious damage to buildings in the capital, Quibdó,” reported the governor of the department, Nubia Carolina Córdoba, on the social network X.
The official indicated that authorities are conducting an assessment of the damage to issue an initial official report on the emergency.
Images shared on social media show buildings that have collapsed partially or completely in different sectors of Quibdó, while several citizens took to the streets after the strong movement.
Damage has also been reported in cities in the west and center of the country such as Cali, Manizales, Pereira, and Medellín, while emergency agencies continue to gather information on the extent of the damage.
Chocó, one of the regions with the highest poverty rates in Colombia and significant infrastructure deficiencies, is currently the focus of authorities' attention due to the scale of the damage caused by the earthquake.
