The Secretariat of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection (SGIRPC) announced a seismic drill in the state of Colima, scheduled for this Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at 12:00 PM, Central Mexico Time. The exercise is part of preventive measures against natural risks and will be conducted with the manual activation of the Seismic Alert only in Colima.

In parallel, federal authorities maintain constant surveillance over the activity of the Colima Volcano, following the issuance of a Special Notice due to atmospheric conditions that could favor the dispersion of gases, water vapor, and ash in the event of an exhalation.

According to information released by the SGIRPC and the Center for Instrumentation and Seismic Recording (CIRES), the drill will be carried out exclusively in the state of Colima and does not involve the activation of the Seismic Alert in other states of the country, nor through cell phones.

The activation will be intermittent and manual, at the express request of local authorities, so the results of the exercise will be the direct responsibility of the state government. The objective is to evaluate response protocols and strengthen public preparedness for a real earthquake.

Authorities noted that the drill seeks to reinforce a culture of prevention, especially in a region with constant seismic and volcanic activity. The SGIRPC urged the population to stay informed only through official channels and to update their family civil protection plans.

The National Meteorological Service (SMN) issued a Special Notice detailing that, due to clear visibility in the volcano area, in the event of any exhalation of water vapor, gas, and/or ash, the main trajectory would head toward the east-northeast of the crater.

Currently, the volcano remains in a stage of passive degassing, which allows for direct observation and continuous satellite monitoring.

Based on the Hysplit model, executed by Conagua-SMN, and considering a possible emission at 500 meters above the volcanic cone, it is expected that, should exhalations occur:

  • Primeras 12 horas (09:00 a 21:00 h):Trayectorias hacia el noreste de Colima, sur y sur-sureste de Jalisco, oeste y norte de Michoacán, y sur de Guanajuato.
  • Siguientes 12 horas (21:00 a 09:00 h):Afectaciones potenciales en el norte y noreste de Michoacán, sur y este de Guanajuato, así como zonas del suroeste y oeste de Querétaro.

Prevailing winds fluctuate between 37 and 51 km/h, which directly influences the dispersion of the volcanic plume.

Llamado de Protección Civil a la población

The SGIRPC reiterated the call not to create alarm, to differentiate between the drill and a real event, and to remain attentive to official communications regarding both the seismic exercise and the activity of the Colima Volcano, one of the most active in the country.
