The Mexican rock and synth-pop band Camilo Séptimo lamented on Wednesday night the death of their keyboardist Jonathan Samuel Meléndez Ochoa, known as “Honas,” who was murdered in his home along with his pregnant wife and his 3-year-old daughter.
In addition to Meléndez and his family, their domestic employee Aleyda Romero and the family dog were also murdered. Meléndez's eldest son, 6 years old, managed to survive by hiding under a bed.
“With deep sorrow, we say goodbye to our dear brother. To his wife Ana Paula and his daughter Sofía,” stated Camilo Séptimo in a statement published on their social media. “We will always remember him with immense love and gratitude. Today we honor and celebrate his life, his music, his light.”
The Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, confirmed on Wednesday that an alleged business partner of Meléndez had taken advantage of the trusting relationship between the two to enter his home and carry out the attack. Another suspect, who allegedly helped him escape, was also arrested. The detainees were identified as Diego Sebastián “N”, Meléndez's partner, and Gerardo “N”.
The homicides occurred on Tuesday in Atizapán de Zaragoza, a town in the State of Mexico bordering the capital.
Camilo Séptimo (sometimes stylized as Camilo VII or CVII) was founded in 2013 in the Mexican capital by vocalist Manuel Mendoza, guitarist Erik Vázquez, and Meléndez.
Their albums include “Óleos,” “Navegantes,” “Ecos,” and “Jardín de las almas,” as well as the EP “Maya.”
They have performed in several editions of the Vive Latino festival and on important stages such as the Palacio de los Deportes and the Auditorio Nacional. Some of their best-known songs are “No confíes en mí,” “Miénteme,” and “Vicio.”
