Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are on the verge of returning to the United Kingdom after almost six years of abandoning their role within the royal family, but now under a completely different model. What do the Duke and Duchess have planned?
According to a source cited by The Sunday Times, the Sussexes are looking to maintain a kind of “upgraded private royalty, with special functions,” a hybrid position that would allow them to maintain their link to the Crown without fully returning to their former obligations as working members.
The strategy would involve a more discreet and mutually beneficial relationship with King Charles III and other members of the family, with appearances at certain events and family gatherings, but without taking on a permanent official agenda.
As the source warns, the challenge of maintaining this dynamic would be enormous: given all the controversy generated by the comments made against the royal family, Harry and Meghan would be under intense scrutiny to avoid any perception that they intend to monetize their personal brand from British territory, especially after the commercial deals they developed after moving to California.
“They will be under the microscope, watching for anything that looks like an attempt to monetize their brand,” the insider states, adding: “It has always been thought that they can do it in Montecito, but not here. If they come and apply the same strategy as in Montecito, that will not be well received.”
The ideal scenario for the Sussexes, according to the source for the Duke and Duchess to be successful after their move, would be to become a couple that is “more private than working,” although with the possibility of appearing alongside royals on special occasions, such as Christmas at Sandringham.
For this to happen, there must be an eventual reconciliation with certain members of the family and it would require the support of key figures such as Prince William and Princess Kate Middleton, a prospect that seems complicated due to the family rift that seems to have no solution.
It is well documented that the princes have not had a cordial relationship or even one based on protocol since the death of Queen Elizabeth in 2022, despite the efforts Harry has allegedly made to approach his older brother and obtain a pardon.
It was the Duke of Sussex himself who said in an interview with the BBC that he has tried to fix the relationship with his brother, but has not succeeded: “There is no point in continuing to fight,” he noted at the time.
While it has been reported that there are big plans for the Sussexes and their children Archie and Lilibet in the United Kingdom, the same source maintains that Harry and Meghan could remain in Great Britain for between six months and a year before considering another move.
Among the destinations that could be on the table are Canada and Australia, two countries that would allow the couple to maintain an international life and, at the same time, preserve greater independence from the British Royal House.
