The medical drama "The Pitt" and the comedy "Hacks" led the nominations on Wednesday for the Emmy Awards, the equivalent of the Oscars for American television.
"The Pitt" accumulated 25 nominations, including one for best drama, while the fifth and final season of "Hacks" earned 24, one of which was for best comedy.
In the miniseries category, "Beef" dominated with 16 nominations.
A cross between "ER" and "24", "The Pitt" had already been crowned best drama series last year, thanks to its relentless pace in showcasing the day-to-day life of emergency room doctors at a hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
In its second season, immigration authorities bring an injured woman to the hospital. The series alludes to the threats facing medical research due to budget cuts by the administration of US President Donald Trump.
Noah Wyle, who rose to fame for his role in "ER," is competing again as the favorite for best actor, an award he already received in 2025 for his performance in "The Pitt."
But the hegemony of the medical drama could be challenged by "Pluribus," which earned 18 nominations.
Created by Vince Gilligan, the man behind "Breaking Bad," the Apple TV series follows a misanthropic novelist who is immune to a virus that has left humanity completely blissful and satisfied.
Already awarded a Golden Globe in January, its lead actress, Rhea Seehorn, is being touted as a strong candidate for the Emmy for best actress.
The other competitors for best drama are the political thriller "The Diplomat" starring Keri Russell, the spy series "Slow Horses," and the "Game of Thrones" prequel "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms."
- "Hacks" contra "Widow's Bay" -
In the field of comedy, the competition is split between a veteran favorite and a newcomer.
"Hacks," the story of a comedian trying to revive her career with the help of her millennial assistant, leads with 24 nominations.
The show's star, Jean Smart, has already won four Emmys for her portrayal of Deborah Vance and was nominated again. Her co-star Hannah Einbinder won her first Emmy last year.
Closely following is the new Apple TV horror-comedy series, "The Curse of Widow's Bay," with 19 nominations.
In the comedy section, fierce competition is expected, with Apple TV's "Shrinking," starring Jason Segel and Harrison Ford as psychiatrists, and the final season of "The Bear," a satire set in the Chicago culinary world.
"The Bear" has won 21 Emmy Awards in previous years, including two for its lead actor, Jeremy Allen White, although he was not nominated this year.
Among the nominees for best miniseries are "Beef" and "Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette." The latter attracted great attention with its look at the couple's courtship and their untimely deaths, but only earned six nominations.
Netflix's "Beef" stars Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan in its second installment and follows the explosive dynamic between two couples.
