Charles Spencer's memoir, Swan Song: Diana, my sister, has shaken the royal family and its followers with new revelations about the life and death of Lady Di, as well as everything experienced from her childhood to the stormy marriage she had with Charles III.
One of the most discussed passages these days is the one that speaks about how the princess was treated by her stepmother, Raine Spencer, and the taunts she made even about her marriage to the son of Queen Elizabeth.
According to Charles's recollection, at a family gathering, Diana pushed her stepmother down the stairs after she told her that she felt sorry for the then-prince for having married her, calling her a "fool."
"I have always felt very sorry for the Prince of Wales for marrying someone as stupid as you," Raine said to Diana during a meeting held at the family estate to celebrate the rehearsal of Charles Spencer's wedding.

Charles remembers that Diana and her siblings detested Raine for marrying their father Johnnie Spencer in secret, as they believed she did not love him but was merely a "gold digger" looking to take over the Althorp estate, which had belonged to the Spencer family for past generations.
The Earl notes in the book that the conflicts between both women arose as soon as Raine moved into the family home and began meddling in private affairs.
The tension between the two escalated when her stepmother began making comments against Diana and prevented her mother, Frances Shand Kydd, from getting close to the family.
According to Spencer, on the night of the rehearsal, Raine forbade Shand Kydd from entering, and upon finding out, Lady Di confronted her and stressed that, as the mother of the groom, she had to be included in the rehearsal.
During the argument, Raine expressed the pity she felt for Charles, and in response, in the middle of her anger, Diana pushed her down the stairs: "Diana paused for a second, surprised by the intensity of the malice. Then she stepped forward, hooked a leg around Raine's calves, and pushed her down the carpeted stairs."
After the heated confrontation, Raine withdrew from the rehearsal and Diana was able to include her mother in the celebration. For her part, the stepmother left the place without any physical harm from the fall.
