American filmmaker Nick Reiner was formally charged this Wednesday with the murder of his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, which occurred during a stabbing attack at the director's residence in Los Angeles last December.
The indictment issued by a grand jury replaces the one filed after his arrest on December 15 and includes charges of murder with special circumstances and lying in wait. He also faces a charge for the personal use of a dangerous and deadly weapon.
Following the arraignment, the 32-year-old Reiner pleaded not guilty to the fatal stabbing on December 14, 2025, of 78-year-old actor, director, and producer Rob Reiner and 70-year-old photographer Michele Singer Reiner at their home in the luxurious Brentwood neighborhood.
Reiner fled the scene but was arrested that same night in a park in the southern part of the city of Los Angeles.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said in a statement today that he hopes the formal indictment moves the process "one step closer" toward trial and obtaining justice.
"This was a profound betrayal by someone whom the very people he is accused of killing loved and trusted," the district attorney declared.
The defendant is scheduled to appear again for a pre-trial hearing on September 15.
Last April, his older brother, Jake Reiner, wrote a personal essay detailing how he learned of his parents' deaths, describing how painful the loss has been for him and his sister Romy.
Jake Reiner also reflected on the extraordinary experiences afforded to him by being the son of a Hollywood star and director of classics such as 'When Harry Met Sally' (1989). He describes his father as his "hero" and his mother as a loving and unconditional person, and he avoids mentioning Nick.
Nick Reiner remains in prison without bail. In the past, he had spoken publicly about his years-long struggle with substance addiction.
He was also diagnosed with schizophrenia several years ago, and some media outlets reported that he was receiving treatment for a serious psychiatric disorder at the time of the murder, so this condition is expected to play a significant role in the case.
