María Vargas, representative of Jalisco, was crowned Miss Universe Mexico 2026 and will be in charge of representing Mexico in the 75th edition of the international Miss Universe pageant.
The 28-year-old model was chosen from among 32 candidates during the competition held this weekend in Los Cabos, Baja California, where she received the crown from her predecessor, Fátima Bosch.
With this triumph, María Vargas prepares to carry the Mexican flag to the international stage of Miss Universe 2026, which will take place on November 24th in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The representative of Jalisco will seek to repeat Mexico's success in the beauty pageant.
During her speech after winning the coveted crown, María Vargas highlighted the legacy of Fátima Bosch, who a year earlier became Miss Universe Mexico and subsequently obtained the international title amidst controversy and criticism regarding her participation and influence.
The new queen stated that she wants to continue her message and use her voice to empower other women: “The voice is not only raised to speak for others, but to listen better and demonstrate that raising one's voice not only helps one's neighbor, but also opens doors that were previously closed to us”.
Who is María Vargas, the new Miss Universe Mexico?
But behind the glamour, the presence, and the face of the new Miss Universe Mexico 2026, there is a story that goes beyond the runways. María Vargas, 28, is originally from Guadalajara, Jalisco, has studied international business, and, in addition to working as a model, has also developed as a writer and businesswoman.
Her journey to the title of Miss Universe Mexico has been marked in her personal biography, titled Miss Trouble, in which she addresses an accident that marked her life and the difficulties she has faced due to prejudice and criticism.
As she has recounted, one of the central messages of her book revolves around identity and the importance of not allowing other people to define who you are: “That no one can define you but yourself,” the model affirmed, a reflection that now takes on special relevance as she begins her stage as a national representative.

Fátima Bosch ended her reign as Miss Universe Mexico with an emotional message directed to her Mexican fans, in which she thanked them for the affection she received during her year as a national representative and assured them that her bond with the country will remain intact: “Today my reign ends, but the pride of being Mexican will never end... Thank you for allowing me to live this dream, but above all, thank you for your love”.
After the ceremony, where María Vargas won the crown, Bosch shared a video on her social networks to take stock of her period as a beauty queen and everything she experienced over the last year.
The former queen recalled that wearing the sash and crown of Miss Universe Mexico meant fulfilling the dream she had since she was a girl: to represent her country to the world and carry the Mexican flag with pride.
“Today ends a chapter that changed my life forever, the dream of a girl who was born in Mexico... Representing Mexico, carrying its flag on my shoulders and showing the world the strength, the attitude, and the heart of our people, will always be the greatest honor of my life,” affirmed the model from Tabasco.
