The controversy ignited and social media exploded against Yuri after she made a comment about Belinda and Danna, who are currently performing major 80s hits in the production Mentiras: All Stars; the singer of "La maldita primavera" mentioned both singers and asserted: "they will never sing like me." This phrase caused an uproar among the famous stars' fans.
During a recent performance, Yuri mentioned Belinda and Danna directly regarding their participation in Mentiras: All Stars and, although she first acknowledged that the young singers do their versions well, she ended with a sentence that sparked controversy.
The singer commented that there is currently a new generation that performs songs originally popularized by artists from the 80s. She also referred to how singers from her generation have been the subject of comments related to their age.
"Look at what is happening with this show Mentiras, with Danna Paola, Belinda, and all these young girls. They sing 80s songs, oh wow... (...) and they belittle those of us from the 80s: 'oh the old ladies, oh the ones who have everything sagging, oh the ones who can't hit the notes anymore'. Do they do it well or poorly? Of course they do it well, they do it nicely, but they will never sing like me," she stated.
Following these comments, social media users were divided: while some defended Yuri and considered that she was simply talking about the difference between performing one's own song and covering one, other internet users felt the statement had a tone of superiority toward Belinda and Danna.
"Well, she should be grateful that the new generations know those songs and keep her relevant through those young singers," "She should be grateful that thanks to Belinda and Danna she is receiving royalties," "Ma'am, stop being envious," "The one and only queen Yuri," "She is an arrogant lady," and "She has all the experience to criticize them" were some of the comments on social media.
